Gates Pass. This photo didn't work
- it's supposed to be a picture of the
sun shining brightly off the cholla cactus which dot the hillside.
The cholla (pronounced "choy-ya")
is the small pale green/whiteish cactus on the right in the foreground.
Bigelow cholla are covered in what appear to be furry white spines - giving
them the name "Teddy Bear Cactus".
The spines are actually wickedly pointy with a hook on the end, so when you
brush against them, a bobble sticks
to you like glue - which is the purpose: this is how cholla propagate.
Also in the foreground are prickly pear
(light green round things), an ocotillo (pronounced "oc-co-tee-yo")
(it’s the bunched brown sticky tall thing almost in the middle), and a
saguaro (peeking in, to the left).
