Chris Martin cut is as finely as you can by coming over the
finish line at 5:15 a.m. making for a very tense last few minutes. |
And
the final finisher - the luckiest horse alive, Spider, who spent the night
out on the California Loop, awaiting rescue. Spider's owner Jon Stevens
went out with the rescue team at first light on Sunday morning, fearing
the worst. Jon scrabbled down the near-vertical embankment where they had
slipped off the trail in the early hours and, upon reaching the river,
found Spider scraped to heck but otherwise uninjured, waiting patiently
for someone to come and extract him from his predicament. He had slipped
nearly 750' to the river below. Best wishes for a full recovery, but by
the looks of him on the webcam Jon has trained on Spider's paddock, he was
back to racing around the day after his ordeal. |
