Devil's Thumb, 23 September 2001

Img_0752.jpg (103956 bytes)Devil's Thumb itself, as you near the top of the canyon.

This was the weekend after we first got Chili, so we were trying to figure her out, as she was us.

Img_0756.jpg (41374 bytes) We started down the trail to see what it was like. Img_0759.jpg (71166 bytes)Looking back up the way we just came - see the angle of the trees compared to the angle of the trail - this is *steep*.
Img_0764.jpg (107543 bytes)Pretty soon we realised what a bad idea this was. What goes down, has to come back up again and we were feeling wimpy. Img_0769.jpg (35167 bytes)Arty shot with dust motes and WST sign in the foreground.
Img_0770.jpg (89127 bytes)The footing was good, but the feeling of the backs of your calves stretching as you trudged up the hill really made you appreciate what Tevis horses accomplish. Img_0771.jpg (97170 bytes)Chili n' me trying to stay upright as we near the top of the canyon. She didn't think trudging uphill was much fun, either.
Img_0776.jpg (72652 bytes)Looking across the canyon - the riders come down that side to the Swinging Bridge at the bottom, and then "pop" back up this side. Img_0777.jpg (85494 bytes)The White Truck's first four wheel drive experience with us. Brilliant! Now we can go anywhere and do anything (well, at least drive about in the backwoods without worrying about getting totally stuck).
Img_0781.jpg (62686 bytes)Chili gets a drink from my smooshable bucket. Patrick's hands are nicer smelling than that plastic bucket, apparently. Img_0782.jpg (60097 bytes)Same idea, only I turned the flash on, so you can see how lovely and shiney she is.
