This was a watering hole for local wildlife... except there wasn't any water. I’m guessing that during any rain, this area becomes a catch basin (it was surrounded by sand washes).  There was way more flora in this small area - lots of cheerful looking cacti and yucca plants, as well as juniper trees.

We came close to getting totally lost exploring this small area. It appeared to be a small collection of big rocks, but the further we walked around, the more rocks there were, until we were totally turned around.

We did manage to circumnavigate it in the end, but there were a few worried moments and visions of spending the rest of the night clambering around.
