No Hands Bridge to Auburn Overlook (and back) - 24 January 2002

IMG_1622a.jpg (84146 bytes)Here we are at the trailhead (hw-49 crossing) at the bottom of Auburn Canyon.

Behind Sally and Provo is the Foresthill Divide and Old Foresthill Road. If you click for the larger pic and squint at the bush in the bottom right hand side, under it, you can see a tiny singletrack which is the bottom of the Lake Clementine Loop mountain bike trail. Patrick and I rode it once and I felt a lot safer doing that singletrack stuff on the horse than I did on my bike... <g>

IMG_1619a.jpg (99110 bytes)The Middle Fork of the American River (pic taken 30' to the right of the one next door). Again, if you squint at the large pic, you can see part of the River Road, which is the trail used for Tevis. The riders come up to where Sally's standing, and cross over the road to get to the short bit of trail that leads to No-Hands Bridge (behind me).

There is also a family of beavers just up-river.

Here we all are on the Bridge. I was trying to get Sally to slow down, so I could take a pic of her and Provo with the river in the background. Unfortunately, Provo hadn't been ridden since Sally rode him last time she was here, just before Christmas, so he had other ideas. Witness him backing towards the drop-off in the pic on the right (<snicker> "Yes, no problem, you can come and ride my horse...").

Mouse is, of course, being as good as gold and not even looking much like a hippo in these pics.

In the last pic, you can see Mouse's "tide mark" - where her blanket and jammies end around her neck (shiney white body) and then the rest of her is stained orange. Can't wait until summer...

IMG_1630a.jpg (99232 bytes)Provo finally standing still, although he's not too convinced.

Lookie at the lovely orange legs.

IMG_1631a.jpg (107842 bytes) IMG_1632a.jpg (83988 bytes) In the background, you can see the hw-49 bridge (down low) and then up near the sky, the Foresthill Bridge.
IMG_1633a.jpg (111392 bytes)Provie showing off his lovely plaits (which have been in there for a couple of months - I really should give him a brush out) and his nicely-growing-back-in portion of mane. I plaited him up because he scrapes on the tree and turns his mane into witchy knots.
IMG_1634a.jpg (53748 bytes)Action shot of us all going along (bearing in mind I'm leading Mouse and running backwards to take the pic...).

This is what Mouse really looks like... honest...

IMG_1635a.jpg (43325 bytes)Well, OK, maybe *this* is more what she looks like.

We had a nice time - completing our eight mile round trip in a speedy 3 hours (2.7 mph - endurance riders R us <g>)...

Actually, this was very good for Mouse and I. We have been really up and running since Christmas, and this was the first longer trail ride we'd taken since we've been working on her head.

Apart from having to spook at the legendary Sierra attack squirrels, she did really well. Her downhill abilities are improving muchly (resulting in striding out downhill, instead of stupid mincing steps), although we still need to work on getting her off her front end - pushing from behind isn't part of her body's vocabulary yet... we're working on it. Sally had me ride her all-collected all the way home, and I think we both felt it, but she only started to get crabby in the last half mile or so.
