Many of the horses we visited in the barn area
were in ultra-nap mode. There are a mixture of open pipe-barn stalls and
closed wooden stalls. |

|
Nevada's Rebel - giving it a second try this time with
owner Lisa Stein on board. Alas, once again it was not to be and Lisa
pulled them at Robinson Flat. |
|
What sensible crew-people do the day after the Ride. |
|
There were a multitude of horses doing baby Jesus
impersonations in the barn.
This is Tony Benedetti's CA Esplendor who was pulled for lameness at
Foresthill. |
|
CA Esplendor |
|
This horse was very bright eyed, plump and bushy tailed...
but it also didn't have a butt number, so probably spent Saturday
lounging in its stall. According to the sign on the stall, it belongs to
Bob Spoor. |
|
Shahdow Bey who completed his first 100 with Cinda Wilford.
They finished at 4:32. |
|
Shahdow Bey |
|
Shahdow Bey (I am friends with Shahdow's previous owner,
and she asked me to look out for him. I spent all weekend "looking
out" for him, but never saw him at all - even when I was apparently
standing right next to him at the out-timers at Foresthill. But it
wasn't for want of trying.) |
|
All the way from Phoenix, AZ, Kim Abbott (left) -
Shahdow's new owner and Cinda Wilford who rode him. They (and another
friend) finished at
4:32. |
|
Swede who had given up trying to steal his neighbour's
food and instead opted for a lie down. He and Mary Abbott finished at
3:48. |
|
Bey Shadow (not to be confused with Shahdow Bey). |
|
I couldn't fit the whole horse in, so took him in two
parts. |
|
|
|
Swede again. |
|
Duke who came all the way from Alberta, Canada. He and Bob Toothill
finished at 4:41. |

Freebee (rider, Cherry Stockton) who finished at 2:49. |

Debby Lyon (#75) on Belesemo Malik
Pulled (Voluntary) - Deadwood...
Except this isn't Belesemo Malik...this is an impostor. (Belesemo Malik
is one of my favorite dapple greys - and this one isn't remotely
dappled). |
|
I looked for Sylvia Beverly and Harca all day, but never
saw them... this might have been because, for some reason, in my mind's
eye, I thought Harca was brown.
Sylvia was all set to do Tevis last year with Harca for the second
time (?)(her 3rd or 4th go), when he pulled a suspensory. Sylvia was a
good owner and turned to her youngster and gave Harca the time he needed
to recover. |
|
And it paid off. She and Harca finished at 3:42. Good job!
Well done Sylvia! |
|
Looks like a Western State blanket from 1993... sorry,
don't know the horse, though. |
|
Ah! Harca from the opposite side of the stall. Great butt,
Sylvia! |
|
I though this was the front of Godfrey Sullivan's SE Blue
Max. He and Max finished in 11th spot at 00:54... except Max is supposed
to be #30... #279 (as this horse seems to be marked) was a "grey
anglo arab" - which this obviously isn't... whereas it does look
like Max (and was labelled on the stall as being Godfrey's) |
|
?? Back of of Godfrey Sullivan's SE Blue Max (it was that,
or have him dissected by the bars of the stall...) ?? |
|
?? SE Blue Max ??? schmoozling with his neighbour. |
|
Razzman - Julie Suhr's mount who carried her to her 21st
buckle at 4:43 |
|
Springdale Witez who had never been more than 50 miles
before... however, he did have Barbara White on top, collecting her 24th
buckle - so I think he had an advantage. I saw them leaving Foresthill
around 21:30 and he looked a little worried as to what they might be
doing. Barbara (Julie's daughter) suggests that "insanity is
hereditary". |
|
Springdale Witez (I'm pleased to report him peeing nice
clear yellow just before this photo <grin>). |

There's always one sad story, isn't there? This is Frank
Solano and his home bred BTR Ranger all the way from Gering, NE.
I had heard rumours of "someone" falling off Cougar Rock...
"Was that man who fell off Cougar Rock OK?" they asked. |
|
Frank asked if they were wondering "Was that *dork*
who fell off Cougar Rock OK?". Poor Frank. Apparently they were
nearly at the top when Ranger's back feet slipped out from under him. He
lunged in a panic and slipped again and they ended up all the way at the
bottom. |
|
Luckily, Ranger escaped without injury... not so
Frank.
This is his pumpkin hand.... |
|
...and this is his smooshed and battered nose.
But he had to be the most cheerful (smooshed and battered) person we
came across. He said they wasted about 45 minutes after the
"incident" and then had to rush to beat cut-off. All this
conspired to making Ranger poop out at Michigan Bluff.
I guess the question is, though, did they get a Cougar Rock photo? |
|
Ranger vied for "Prettiest horse award"
(formerly held by Belesemo Malik) with Bev Gray's Paladin (below). |
|
Beverly Gray's Paladin having his bath. Bev and Paladin
finished at 2:32. |
|
Richard Goodwin (your webmaster par excellence), Wendy
Swanson (rider (Shearwater) and new Tevis buckle holder) and Natalie Arnold
(webmaster widow). Wendy finished at 3:38 and now wants to join Tevsweep. |
|
Olive Pollitt... who may be from Scotland but isn't
Scottish. |
|
My trusty steed of the weekend - big black bird. |
|
So Patrick and me, convinced that I probably hadn't had
enough exercise yesterday, thought we'd better cycle along the river road to the
Quarry to see what's left...
Not much - but I'm surprised the deer didn't find this choice items
yet.
|
|
The Quarry is one of the less remote checks, being a mere
1.5 miles from the nearest main road. |
|
Patrick practising "trotting out" his bike... |
|
It's kind of odd looking, now it's all over...
But you know... I *didn't* need the exercise - or at least that's
what my newly-operated knee says right now. |
