The top ten horses are judged for the best condition award - the Haggin Cup.

First place finisher, Judy Reens (Benjih), 6th place Boyd Zontelli (Rueben), and 9th place Dean Jackson (Belesemo Tradition) opted not to show for BC.

Ravi Das was bumped into the top ten after 10th place finisher Richard Smith's horse Scotch Pine Wizor was pulled right at the finish line.

At the awards ceremony, most of the top ten horses were brought into the grassy arena. These photos were taken just before and during the awards.

Tevis Cup winner Judy Reens and Benjih+, coming in at 22:58 (the ride started at 5:15 this years). Judy comes from Concord, CA (Bay Area).

AAA Amadeus - second place finisher, with a finish time at 23:16. Dolly Decair (hiding behind him) lives in Foresthill, CA
Amadeus
Amadeus.

What I hadn't realised before taking the pictures, is what a dab hand Dolly is at discreetly stepping behind her horse's head, so that she's out of sight and out of the picture.

Amadeus was one of three stallions to finish the ride.
While roaming the barn area, we came across 3rd place finisher Desert Patriot who was ridden by Robert Palmeri. He (she?) was being fetched for the top ten presentation. He was bright eyed and happy looking.

Robert finished at 23:33.

The lady (his own personal beauty therapist) came equipped with damp paper towels to tidy up any unsightly blemishes.

Although a little stiff when first brought out of his stall (one of the deluxe double-size stalls in the pipe barn), he limbered up after a short walk.

They are from Foresthill.

4th place - Tom Johnson and Split. Tom finished at 23:33 and is a successful ride and tie competitor. He from Loomis, CA. (As an aside, his SO is Marcia Smith, Tevis cup winner in 1997, with Elvis (On a High)).
5th place = Potato Richardson - Fille de Cailana (apparently got taken home?)
6th place = Boyd Zontelli - Rueben ( did not show for BC)
I think this horse was just passing through to chat with Tom Johnson. However, if I scrunch my face up, it looks like it might be #206 - which means it is Crystal's Charm - or Red, as he's known, Haggin Cup Winner from last year with Heather Bergantz. This year, Red ran up front until about 2pm when they were pulled at Pacific Slab Mine.
Red?
Red?

7th place = Sandy Brown and Ruby (the very large mule on the right). Sandy is the tall guy holding the lead rope in the center of the picture. Ruby was the very popular winner of the Haggin Cup two years ago in 1998 - when all day long, every time I arrived at a vet check too late to see the front runners, I was greeted with "Did you see that mule? Amazing!". Ruby finished at 23:50 and she and Sandy are from Salt Lake City.

8th place - Suzanne Huff and Chase with a finish time of 23:51. Suzanne is from Auburn, CA. She was also on the waiting list for the ride.
9th place - Dean Jackson with Belesemo Tradition (also known as Red) with a finish time of 23:51. Dean is from Bluffdale, UT. Last year, Dean and his wife, Mary Jane, won the AERC Husband and Wife Team award.
Belesemo Tradition wishing he could get to go and eat grass...it's *just* over there....
11th place - but bumped up to 10th place, Haggin Cup winner, Elise Geske and Ravi Das. Elise finished at 00:18. She is from Berkeley, CA.
Resting his weary head on Elise's stomach.
It's a hard life having to eat all this grass.
Milarepa (left) and Ravi Das.

I was at the hw-49 crossing (~mile 95) when Elise and "Socks" came through and they looked wonderful - she was quietly trotting up the road - no hurry, just a steady, easy trot. He was perky and forward moving and we commented at the time how he didn't look even vaguely like he'd gone that far.

I was interested to see the difference in size between previous Haggin Cup winner Ruby (background) and Ravi (front). They are... er... different.
Amadeus, still looking out for girls. Dolly had to take him back in the end to settle him down.
