New Truck
12 September 2001

When we bought Big Black Bird (i.e. our black 2500 Chevy truck), we opted to go for two-wheel drive. Big mistake. Now here we are with a ridiculously steep driveway and no way to get a horse trailer (with fat pones therein) up the hill without frantic scrabbling and destruction of said driveway. 4x4 was needed.
  • We got together the money for a new truck, but then realised that driving 130 miles a day to Sacramento and back in a 30 yr old Fiat was a bad idea and bound to end in tears, so we bought Savannah instead.
  • Then we tried to also buy a brand new truck. What *were* we thinking???
  • So then we decided to just give up on the 4x4 idea altogether and just make do.
  • Two days after that decision, we bought the following truck. Call us decisive.

Here's us driving home after our impulse purchase. I'm in Savannah, driving behind taking pictures without taking my eyes off the road (hence the fact that in most of the pictures I took, the truck wasn't even visible in them).

This truck basically picks up where Big Black left off.

The year is the same (1998), the colour is the same (if you kind of squint), and it has roughly the same amount of miles (89k).

But it is a big block engine (so now we can chant "big block" with confidence) and has 4x4. And goes up the driveway brilliantly without even noticing the trailer attached the back. It can even start right from the steepest spot with smiling, sticking tyres.

It feels a little funny - kind of like driving Big Black, but not. The interior is leather (what were the two things I said I wouldn't do? Leather interior and white exterior), it feels heavier (probably because it is), and sits higher. But all the buttons and knobs are in the same place and it just feels right.

Upon inspection, I also notice that they have their flags out in...what? commemoration? defiance? of Tuesday's events on the east coast. It has become almost like a backwards 4th July - with flags out everywhere.

We are very sad about all that. And we are very glad to be living out in the sticks.
